FAQ
I’ve decided to change this page around a little bit. This page was formerly known as the “Topics” page, but since readers have been asking some great questions that sometimes require simple answers, I wanted to provide some links on this page to posts I put up in response to those questions. That way everyone can have easy access to things like lists and step-by-step guides without having to do a lot of searching. I’ve also been using this page as a home for more generic posts like reviews, and general announcements.

This site is helpful already. Thank you for taking the time to put it together!
I have two suggestions for future articles:
1) On the DGA Tour’s website Hog posted an thread that described the option settings to use when playing slow, average, and fast greens and fairways, as well as the short, medium, and long roughs. It would be helpful to see a reference chart listed on this website, and
2) I notice alot of the more experienced players are able to make a long shot resulting in a single bounce from the fairway onto the green to setup for a eagle shot. How is that done? What is the thought process? I had a long conversation this evening with a fellow DGA player who tried to explain this to me. If anyone could manage to put in writing some of these thought processes, we could all benefit.
These a just a few ideas I have for future articles (obviously they are self-serving).
Mama1018, just to clarify, you are talking about an approach shot from the fairway to hit the green in one bounce, right? You’re not talking about driving from the tee. Is that correct?
Yes! Many Thanks!
i was just wondering if you could tell me all the golfers on the game? 09
Sure, Harry. I just put up a post of the list. You can find it on the front page, or get to it directly by clicking here.
I would like to see a step by step way to swap new clubs. I thought I had purchased a set of irons, but the “purchase” didn’t take. I must have missed a step somewhere. Sorry if I missed a detailed way to swap clubs on the forum, but I hadn’t seen one. Thanks.
I’m learning alot from your frequent updates Nochin.
Hi Jerry. I’ll be glad to take a look at this for you and write something up officially. Check back soon…
Jerry, I wrote up an article on swapping out clubs (also linked above). See if that helps, and if not, feel free to leave more comments on that article if it’s still not working for you, and we’ll go from there.
I have played old Montgomery in the Tiger Challenge honeycomb and I cannot beat him even though I have won the most holes on five occasions. I can only guess that there is a rule that I don’t know. Can you help in this small matter? Thanks OD
OldDuffer, what’s the game mode that you are playing? Is it match play, etc.?
Great and VERY VERY helpful site would like to Thankyou for give your time and knowledge to the masses as I personally know the time is spent on make a website as I’ve ran a web site for a karaoke site so I know the time you spend on it and again thanks for all the info you share (HATS OFF TO YOU MAN) keep the site going!!!
Wolfie66, thanks so much for the nice comments. Honestly, what makes this project so fun and satisfying is to see that it is actually helping people. And when I hear positive feedback like your comment above, that’s an extra bonus. Thanks so much for visiting and taking the time to comment!

Tournaments won
I am a fair way through My Career but I cannot see a way in TW09 to see which tounaments I have already won or the ones I haven’t won yet. Some wins are shown provided I won them he previous year but is there a way to identify the missing ones short of keeping a list?
I don’t think so. I’ve wondered this myself. If I find anything I’ll let you know, but I don’t think there’s any way of knowing.
TORNAMENTS WON
Hi I have now found the answer to what has been won.
Enter from main menu to My Career. Open My Stats, then Trophy Room, then pick out Season Mode Trophies. In there it tells you what trophies there are and wether you have won or not.
Hope this will help others. Keep up the valuable work on the site. I’m sure I will need it when I get TW10.
Ah yes! You are right. Thanks for the info, Dad. Now I remember someone posted this on the EA Forum as well when they were trying to find par 5 eagle trophy ball stats.
Great site. Thank you for the info, especially with the gear, was very helpful. I am at 119% complete(TW10 Wii) but have 14 tournaments not completed, including April Fool’s Day Tournament, Shanghai Classic.. I started up a new career and see these tournaments. Are these tournaments only available while still an amature?
Hey Billy. Glad the info was helpful to you. I’m not completely sure about the tournaments you mentioned, although I’m pretty sure that the April Fool’s Day is an amateur-level tournament.
Assuming you’ve only just started out on a career, is there any way you can increase distance on the clubs, especially Driver apart from tuning?
Despite driving at 100%, the max distance seems to be about 240yds.
You need to build up your power stats to get more distance (apart from tuning). As you play through any career mode (PGA Tour Season, FedEx Playoffs, or Tournament Challenge), you’ll earn stat points when you make good shoots. You’ll earn power stats specifically when you drive the ball long and in the fairway. Then, you can spend those stat points to build up your distance. Also, the gear you select will add bonuses to your power stats. You can learn more about that in How to Get Max Stats in 2010.
Hi NCD.
First may I say what a superb site you have created, and thanks for all the hard work and effort you have put into it. There are very few people these days that are willing to help others, with no personal gain to themselves, all credit to you.
I have a few things you may be able to help with.
1. I am about 30% through the PGA Tour and have gained 110% on on all attributes except putting which is 103%. (I have just gained superstar status Jan 2011). Is there any benefit in completing the PGA.
2. After watching your videos on Approach & Putting can you tell me what sort of range your technique will work for, ie wood, irons & wedges and what distances.
3. On play anybody is there any way you can see the opponents skill level before you play. On 09 it was displayed.
Many thanks Tried4it.
No Chin thanks for the great web site. it took me from frustrated to good after taking your advice tuning the clubs. I have TW09 on the wii and wondered:
1. are there ever any people lining the fairways
2. are you ever paired with other golfers like in real tour golf or do you always play by yourself
3. and have you found that the field catches up with you after the first day of shooting a very low round?
thanks again for the awesome website
@Tried4It
Thanks for the kind words. I’m glad you found the site helpful. Here’s what I can say about your questions…
1. There really isn’t much benefit of doing this other than getting all your sponsors and all that. I basically maxed out my stats, and unlocked everything through the Tournament Challenge, then switched to online play. It took me a while to finally finish the PGA Tour because I wanted to play online instead.
2. My techniques work super well for wedge shots, but become a little more difficult the longer club you use. For 5 and 7 iron shots, I tend to account for extra wind effect. So if I’m heading into the wind, I’ll usually add about 5%, and will take off 5% if there is a tailwind. But this doesn’t work the same if you are playing hard (fast) greens, because your shots will bounce and roll further once they hit. I hate to say this, but it’s more about knowing how your shots will fly than straight up calculations. But, using my system will give you a good starting spot. I always start with doing the simple approach calculations first, then make adjustments based on how I know my 5 iron will land and roll.
3. On play anyone matches, you can’t see your opponents before you play them. They took that feature out this year, most likely due to the fact that it was almost impossible to get a game in 2009 if you were highly ranked, because your opponents would see your rank and back out of the match.
@5kids
Now your turn! Thanks also for the kind words. I appreciate it! Now for your questions…
1. There are no people lining the fairways in the Wii version of the game. The “Tour Atmosphere” feature will get them around the greens, however.
2. In the PGA Tour season, you will always play by yourself, unless it is a matchplay event, in which case you’ll be facing off against an actual computer opponent.
3. This is a dynamic scoring system which makes it so the game is more challenging and interesting. Otherwise, you would crush every tournament every time. There has been a TON of discussion about this, and a lot of players have expressed contempt toward it. I know it seems weird, but it’s a built-in feature of the game.
NCD,
Thanks for getting back, I now understand the dynamic scoring system and enjoyed it the other night to be honest, I had to shoot -10 that day to win.
Again great site, maybe the EA developers need to take a look at all these comments and make adjustments in the future!
Good swings to you!
5Kids
NoChin,
Best web site ever. Thanks so much! Your (voluntary) hard work has already vastly improved my TW10 performance and enjoyment. Bought TW09 last year and would have paid a mint for the help you provide here. Bought TW10 last night and have spent the day tracking back and forth between the game and this site. Found you because I couldn’t figure out how to get to 100% off the tee. Thanks to you, now I can.
You ‘da best!
Tom
Hey Tom, so glad to hear it helped. Feel free to post questions or email me personally if you need any more help!
Great site but here’s a question for you. This Old UK fart and his wife want to play PGA Tour Amateur at the same time on TW10 Wii.
Read the booklet, pressed umpteen buttons – can’t work it out.
Can it be done ?? Heeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeelp!
If you mean you want to play through the career mode together, you can’t. The career is single player only. But there are plenty of other great multiplayer modes that you guys could enjoy…
A very well put together site. A couple of questions, I am a real neophyte at this, I have had the game for a couple of weeks and am slowly working my way through the challenges, got some of the medium done but am struggling with others. I am still having difficulty achieving 100% power on all of my shots, I do have the Wii Motion, but can’t seem to work it out consistently. Probably a LOFT (lack of f’ing talent)deal but I can live with that. I have read your posted articles on the max power but still not getting it to go on a consistent enough basis. I also unable to figure out the “clicks of loft” as when I do that it changes clubs on me? Like I said this is really new to me and perhaps I need to revist the manual again? Any suggestions would be appreciated. I really enjoy the site keep up the good work
Thanks
Hey Boomer, with the loft clicks, you have to be holding in the B button and pointing away from the screen when you tap the d-pad, otherwise you’ll switch clubs. As for swinging 100%, read the article again and keep practicing, and if you still can’t get it, email me and I’ll help you out!
Thanks for the info, worked on the swing technique a little more last night and am climbing more consistently into the high 80′s low 90s for percentages and hit a couple at 100. So a work in progress. Will try the clicks of loft this evening. Will continue to use the site as a reference for ways to improve my performance with the game. Thanks again for the help.
Hi everyone,
Could someone clue me in as to the significance of unlocking a golfer? I understand that unlocking a course allows me to actually go play a practice round on it, but what does unlocking a player do?
Same thing for trophy balls and other awards. Do they help my game in some material way, or are they just ornaments for my trophy room?
Thanks!
Tom
Unlocking golfers allows you to play as those golfers. The trophy balls and awards are just achievements, but they don’t do anything special.
Hey,
Great website, lots of really helpful info. We got TW10 a few weeks ago for our college house and are really getting into the career mode. A few questions that have been bugging us:
1. What do all the attributes do for your game? Some are obvious like power and accuracy, but what are ball striking, recovery, putting, and luck? How do they affect your play? I thought putting was all on the player with the Wiimote, so how can the character be better at it? Do some putts just randomly fall?
2. When you are in the rough, and the lie says 80%, does that mean hitting the ball 100% will make it go whatever distance the target circle is at 80%? That simple of an explanation doesn’t seem to have always held true for us.
3. Can you unlock Augusta National?
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help us out with any of these questions.
Hey Graham, a lot of really great questions. Fortunately, I hear them a lot and so I have some good specific answers for you:
1. Ball striking helps you control your distance with irons. You’ll notice that the higher your stats in this area, the more consistent you will be when making approach shots with anything between your PW and 1 iron. With lower stats in this area, you’ll notice your shots coming up short or going long.
Recovery is your ability to get out of bad lies like sand and rough. Low recovery stats will lead to inconsistent distances when hitting out of traps and deep rough, and this is contributing to the inconsistency you mentioned.
With putting, there is computer assistance with your putts. When your putting stats get built up, you’ll notice that the computer actually messes with your actual distance that your swing achieves with the Wiimote, and it will “fudge” it to get it closer to the distance you were aiming for.
Lastly, luck increases your chance of getting lucky bounces that will get you in the hole or close to it. This is all based on probability and computer assistance, and the higher your stats in this area, the more assistance you’ll get.
2. OK, for your question about hitting from the rough, you don’t want to use your power percentage when adjusting for a bad lie. You actually want to calculate the specific yardage to the pin. So, for instance, if you are 100 yards from the pin in an 80% lie, you need to add 20 yards of distance to your shot, not 20% power. This is important, because different clubs have different distances for every 1% of power, so you need to calculate independent of that variation.
3. And lastly, no, you can’t unlock Augusta National. EA tried to get that course in the game, but the Augusta National people declined to participate and did not give EA the rights to use it in the game.
If you have more questions or need clarifications on stuff, feel free to email me at nochindeluxe@tigerwoodspgatour.com
I cannot get game screen to show wind speed and direction , I always have to do into course info – tried everything please help.
Don
I’ve been playing TW09 and have completed the Tiger Woods challenge. Now I am playing the Fedex Cup series and have finished several times. At least I thought I was finished. The meter shows that I have completed 75% and I have completed the four tournaments several times since getting to the 75% mark and have won two of those. Why won’t the meter advance any further? How many times must I play the set of tournaments before I’m finished at 100%?
@don middlemiss,
You can change your screen display options in the game options menu. Also, make sure your master difficulty isn’t set to something like expert, because I think that removes screen display elements as well.
@Hamcamper
In order to complete the FedEx Cup playoffs, you have to win all four tournaments, not just complete them. Have you placed in first in every FedEx tournament?
Is there a set number of players who make the cut at tournaments during the PGA Tour season? I recently got through Q-school so now I’m a rookie. I made the cut in 40th place at Torrey Pines, yet missed the cut in 23rd place at Pebble Beach. Is there a way to know in advance where I need to finish to make the cut?
Thanks, Tom
I guess this really depends on the number of players in the tournament. I’m not sure there is any way to find out. Just play your best and hope to make the cut
As a newbie to TW10 (and a pensioner) my wife and I are just getting to grips with the game. In “real” golf I often pick an “unsuitable” club to play a shot. For instance, gently knock the ball 30 or 40 yards with a 3 iron rather than chip – perhaps because of trees etc. However, the club selection often only gives a certain number of clubs and won’t always let me select the club I want. Presumably this is due to the lie. Often it will only let me select a PW or SI when I want something different. Is there any way to change this – possibly switch the automatic caddy off? If so then how.
Thanks for any help.
Jim.
If you are close enough where you have to chip, your only options will be the clubs the computer gives you. So no, you can’t make special plays like chipping with a 3i low under a tree or chipping with a driver from the rough.
Thanks for reply. Just after I posted my question I was searching for the answer elsewhere and it was suggested (in response to someone else’s different question) that you can select 1 and change the shot type to “Full” which apparently gives you the option to change your club. I am not at home currently so cannot check this for myself but wonder if this is an option under the circumstances I describe.
Thanks I have found the answer which is per my previous post.
Yeah, one of the neat things about the MotionPlus attachment is that you can accurately make low power percentage shots. So even though it’s not technically a chip shot, you can kind of fake it by hitting a really short 3i shot that way.
Not exactly what you said above, but perhaps you didn’t realise I was using M+. However it works fine – better than my efforts in real life.
My mother, who is a senior citizen, has recently purchased TW10, and a wii console to play it on. She is an avid golfer in real life, but plays a very short game. I am noticing that she seems to be somewhat overreaching herself in terms of swing power on some of these demanding tour courses, and I am wondering is there any way of boosting the power level of her swing on the game so that she requires less effort on the controller? I am worried that she may strain something, and I am sure that she would enjoy the game more.
First of all, read my article on getting 100% power with your swing. She needs to first understand that it’s not how hard you swing the remote, but the technique with which you swing it. You don’t have to swing hard at all to get a full shot in this game, but most people don’t swing the remote correctly at first, which leads to them straining themselves. Have a look at the article or have her read it. Here’s the link:
Driving the Ball 100% in Tiger Woods PGA Tour 10
Secondly, when you first start out in the game, your power level stats are really low and your ball will hardly go anywhere. You can earn stats for your character by playing the career mode and applying stat points you earn to your character’s skills. Another option (if she’s not into that) is to purchase a “stats suit” from the online store for 2$. This will give her character maximum stats automatically. If she just wants to play casually, she should play with one of the PGA Tour players or other characters included in the game. Then she’ll already have good stats to work with. If you need any more help with this, feel free to email me, and I’ll help her get started with her game. My address is nochindeluxe@tigerwoodspgatour.com
I’m a PGA Tour Rookie. On the Objectives page, it lists the usual things (play in 7 tournaments, finish in the top 10 in 4, etc.). At the bottom of the screen, there’s an option called “View Statistics.” Yet when I go there, it says “Please begin a PGA TOUR Season event before tyring to view your statistics.” Can you explain this to me? I thought being a rookie meant that I was on the PGA Tour.
Thanks, Tom
You actually have to play some events before you’ll have any stats. If you have already played in some PGA Tour events, this may be a glitch on your profile. I’ve heard this happening many times before. Try accessing your stats from your main career menu instead. Look for the “my stats” menu item.
Hi, thanks for a great site and all of the great tips. I liked watching your youtube videos, a great way to learn fast.
I played a lot of TW10 this weekend and a couple of strange/annoying things happened that have prompted me to write (apologies if they have been discussed before).
Firstly a small “glitch”, where the ball was sunk in the cup (no pin) and then “bounced” out again. I kept on replaying the shot to see what happened but it was just weird. It wasn’t an overly long or fast put, but the ball clearly disappeared out of site i.e. below the lip of the hole, and then bounced up out of the hole to finish about a foot or so away. I must have replayed the shot about 20 times but it was always the same.
Secondly, i started the Fedex cup for the first time (having completed all of the tasks required to get there). First 4 rounds were at Westchester CC, and in the first round i was on fire and hit my best ever round (52, -20 for the round). the rest of the field hit mid 60′s. next round i hit a 60, but suddenly the rest of the field were hitting 51, 52, 53, 54 etc which is just crazy! (the screen pop-up kept on saying “player X makes double eagle at hole X etc). Next two rounds i hit 56 to finish on -68 for the 4 rounds, but the rest of the field were not far behind! (i took a video of the final screen in case anyone anyone wanted to see how the field were following my trend)
At the next Fedex cup cpurse i found the same thing happening again, i would hit a good first round (say -15) followed by “good” rounds of -10 to -12…but the field were making a lot lower scores on their 2nd, 3rd, & 4th rounds. The only way i could get around it was to purposefully play “badly” for 3 rounds, so that i was not the leader, and then play properly for the final round and make like -15 to win the tournament….but i can assure you it is really not fun wasting time playing rubbish for 3 whole rounds just to win the tournament….a complete waste of time and a bad programming error i would say.
(I should add that i am playing with the medium difficulty swing and all of the course settings are also medium difficulty).
one final point, on one of these rounds i made my first hole-in-one, but i was not awarded the “hole-in-one” trophy ball….do you have to be playing the regular PGA season to qualify for these trophy balls?
Once again thanks for the great site!
Andrew
Hey Andrew, glad the site has helped you out. All the stuff you mentioned above has been widely discussed on a variety of sites, including this one. The putting thing is something that’s happened to me before. There are little glitchy things that can happen like that from time to time. Just forget about it and move on. We’re trying to make EA aware of all the little bugs that are still left from a few years ago, and just the fact that you reported it again will help!
As for the AI scoring stuff you mentioned, I was just having a discussion about this the other day on the About page. Here’s what I wrote:
Is there a way to replay amateur tournaments once you have become a Pro. (i.e. Independence Day Tournament, Gator Open, April Fool’s Day Tournament)
The reason I ask is that I am trying to get all of the trophies possible and beat all of the tournaments, but I have already progressed to a Pro.
No there is not, Jeff. Once you go pro, there’s no going back. I had this problem as well. I was goofing off on the Sun City Invitational because I had a huge lead going into the last hole. I decided to try and make this crazy hook shot simply because I had never tried it. I went OB twice and lost the tournament by a stroke! So that’s the only trophy I don’t have.
NCD
Today I unlocked 2 courses I have played these courses before. What do I get with them being unlocked now? Thanks for all your help and I can’t wait for TW 11.
Jerry
Hey Jerry, when you unlock courses you get to play them in multiplayer matches in either play now mode or in game modes.
Hi NCD
Today I went to play round 4 of the tournament. On the first hole I was 22 foot from pin I thought I was going to be close but when I checked the line it was only halfway to the hole. It went this way the whole round. I won by 1 stroke only because I got the heart beat on the last three holes for birdies. This is the first time this has happened to me I’m a pretty good putter but I had a hard time today. If you know what would cause this Please let me know my battery in the remote is good.
Thanks Jerry
Was it raining? Are your green settings set to slow? Those are some things that would cause that to happen.
No it wasn’t raining and the greens were average speed. After I sent you the message I went back in Play mode same course Oakmont and it was fine. Later I played a match in Play mode and everything was ok. All I can say is I’m going to be a little scared in the next tournament. A friend said I should have exited out of the game and then start the last round over. I think you can’t do that and I would be out of the tournament is this correct?
Thanks Jerry
If you save and exit, you can pick up right where you left off. The catch is that you can’t do anything else in the game until you finish that round. But if you were just exiting then going right back in, that shouldn’t be a problem.
I have not gotten this far yet, but a friend tells me she is “locked out” of the mjaor tournaments, even though she is leading the money list. What’s up with that?
Some majors you need to qualify for before you can play them. If you select the locked tournament, it should tell you what you need to do to unlock it.
Hi NoChinDeluxe
I am searching high and low for a TW 10 instructional manual for my dad-in-law. Can you point me in the right direction for a PDF or something?
All the best and thanks for a cool site.
Carsten
I really wouldn’t bother, haha. The “instruction” manual is only 8 pages long, and it doesn’t really instruct, it just kind of describes various features in the game. If you or your father-in-law have any questions about how to play the game, seriously just email me and I’ll get you up to speed. It will be a lot quicker and less confusing, trust me
I answer questions from beginners everyday, so don’t worry about asking anything too basic. You can get me at the following address:
nochindeluxe@tigerwoodspgatour.com
Hi NoChin deluxe I am currently playing through the amateur pga events and have just completed and won the 4 match stroke play at Pebble Beach. I was just wondering how the match up for players occurs and is it designed for the person who logs on to play the event, to win.
Again Many Thanks
GP46
I don’t really know for sure, but I would think that the players are either randomly selected or are set from the start, meaning no matter how many times you play the game, you’ll always play through the same set of characters. The system may also actually simulate matches between the computer controlled players and it may actually “play out” for real and you go up against the real winners of the matches.
NCD
I went to play a CPU opponent and there is no place to select CPU. My only choice is P1 and P2 Wii remote. Do you know where the selection is located at for CPU.
Thanks Jerry
how do i exit true aim?
@Jerry
When you scroll the remote selection over for P1 and P2, you should be able to keep scrolling and it will eventually switch to CPU
@billy
Not sure what you mean by “exit true aim.” If you’re wanting to turn off TrueView, just pause the game and switch your camera settings under the swing settings.
Hello,
First — thanks for the great site! Very helpful.
My question is how can I see what sponsors that I have gained? I just started playing TW11 Wii and have been working through the challenges; haven’t started the PGA Tour yet. I’ve won a few sponsors and would like to see the list of them. I’ve searched around in the ‘My Resume’ and ‘Trophies’ and other sections (perhaps not well enough?) and just haven’t seen where I can display this list.
Thank you!
Hey David, from the My Career menu, you’ll want to go to the PGA Tour Season section, and there should be a button that says “sponsorships.” Hit that and it’ll show you all the sponsorships you currently have.
Thanks much, NCD! Just what I was looking for (seems I didn’t dig far enough).
